How many fire extinguishers do I need?

Fire Extinguisher FAQs

How often does a fire extinguisher need to be inspected?

Monthly checks are recommended.  The fire extinguisher should be inspected and certified annually by a competent maintenance and servicing organisation. An extended service and recharging should be carried out every 5 years. Both the annual and 5-year inspection shall be done by a competent maintenance and servicing organisation.

Why would you need to service your fire extinguisher?

In order to effectively protect the occupants in your building when a fire breaks out, you would need to ensure that the fire extinguisher is in good working condition.  Having it serviced regularly guarantees that the fire extinguisher in your building is in peak condition for its intended use.

Can a fire extinguisher be refilled?

A fire extinguisher can be discharged, pressure tested and then refilled, provided that all the requirements for a fully functioning fire extinguisher are still met.

How long does a fire extinguisher last?

A typical fire extinguisher will have an operable working life of approximately 10 years before it requires replacement. Factors affecting this shelf life would be the location it will be placed at, and the ambient temperature.

Does a fire extinguisher require certification or approval from the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (Bomba)?

Fire extinguishers to be placed in buildings would be regulated by Bomba, and that the Approval Certificate would be required.  Moreover, in accordance to the Uniform Building By-Laws 1984, portable fire extinguishers shall be provided in accordance with the relevant codes of practice and shall be sited in prominent positions on exit routes to be visible from all directions and similar extinguishers in a building shall be of the same method of operation.

However, if the fire extinguisher purchased is to be placed at your home or automobile for personal use, then such certification or approval would not be necessary in this case.  However, it is still highly recommended that you purchase your fire extinguishers from reputable manufacturers so that quality of the product is assured in this case.

Can a fire extinguisher be placed inside a car?

As the operating temperature for a dry powder fire extinguisher is from -20 degree Celsius to 60 degree Celsius, this would not be an issue at all.  In fact, as advised by the Terengganu Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations assistant director Khir Amir Ahmad, vehicle owners should make fire extinguishers a compulsory accessory in the car.  This equipment is an important tool which could greatly reduce vehicle damage in car fires.
